The Finished Work of Creation

When I began voicing my objections to the Virgin Birth doctrine, stating there was no precedent in the Old Testament for such an occurrence, I was met with the claim that the Creation of Adam is the needed precedent for the Creator to create again.

Let’s evaluate what took place in the beginning and test that claim.

Origins-2In the Beginning…

Genesis 1:1 establishes the notion of a Creator God when it records:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth land. (Genesis 1:1 KJV, adaptation mine)

For six days, the author lays out the creation or fashioning of the heaven and the land and seas with vegetation, seed-bearing plants and fruit-bearing trees, and all that is in them, to include: winged fowl, sea creatures, land animals and mankind.  Continue reading

Christmas Tradition vs. Biblical Truth

christmas-tree-giftsWhile I never took to Santa Claus bringing gifts each Christmas, since my cousin spoiled the illusion for me as a child, I used to think erecting and donning a tree for the Christmas holiday was just a fun tradition.  Continue reading

In the Beginning Was the Word – Part 2

This is the second installment of a two-part series on John 1:1-18. If you have not read part one yet, please do so now. 😉

Since we already explored the foundation laid for chapter 1 of John in Part 1 of In the Beginning Was the Word,  let’s consider the structural base that is built upon it by delving into verses 6-18.

Messiah: A Man Over Men

Throughout the New Testament, we read of Jesus/Yeshua being called “Christ”, which is a transliteration of the Greek word, “Christos”. In Hebrew, the word would be “Moshiach”, or in English, “Messiah”. This word in both languages means “Anointed”.

messiah_hebrew_mcIn Christ: The Priesthood and The Kingship, I wrote about how YHVH made covenants with Aaron and David, declaring they and their seed after them were anointed to be Priest and King, respectively.

I also pointed out that in the gospel accounts, Jesus/Yeshua “asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that I am?’ And they told him, ‘John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.’ And he asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him, ‘You are the Christ.’ And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.” (Mark 8:27-30 ESV, emphasis mine)

I had said, “Being “the Christ” does not mean he is more than a man. It simply means he was the man anointed for the job.”

I was particularly referring to being “the Christ” in that statement, and how that title does not indicate something supernatural concerning his physical nature; Being “Christ” didn’t mean he was something other than a human being.

But what does it mean to be “the Christ”?  Continue reading

The Power to Lay It Down and Take It Again

shephard-sheepVerily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life (“psuche” G5590) for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down (”tithemi” G5087) my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take (“lambano” G2983) it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. (John 10:1-18 KJV)

As for John 10:18, what does it mean “to lay it down” and “to take it again”? I think many assume it means to die and to resurrect from the dead (after death), but what if it just means to place one’s being somewhere, and then take it back again all while he was aliveContinue reading

In the Beginning was the Word – Part 1

Too often we either assume or take the words of others concerning various matters as truth without applying proper investigation for ourselves.

1-JohnIn this series I’m calling, “In the Beginning was the Word”, I’m going to break down what I have come to understand concerning John 1:1-18.

This first installment will focus on the first five verses, which I believe to be the foundation of not just the first chapter of John, but the entire book.

The second installment will cover the remaining verses. It appears to me that this opening passage is laid out in a precept upon precept manner, one thing building upon another, therefore it seems logical that we study and receive it in that same manner.

The Alpha and Omega or Aleph Tav

alpha-omegaChristianity identifies Jesus as being the “Alpha and Omega” (in Greek).

And in much of the Messianic community, there’s the understanding that Yeshua is the “Aleph Tav” (in Hebrew).

This is based on a few passages found in Revelation. But is it really Yeshua that is speaking there or someone else?

Let’s take a closer look.

The Book of Revelation

The first reference to “the Alpha and Omega”, or likely “Aleph Tav” in Hebrew, is found early on in the book of Revelation. Let’s look at this reference starting from the beginning. I’ve color coded this passage identifying to whom I believe references are being made throughout.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. (Revelation 1:1-8 KJV)

As you can see the reference to the “Alpha and Omega” here is made by “the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”  Continue reading

Is It a Sin to Worship a Man?

worshipWhen I recently suggested that Jesus was a man, and not God, I was confronted with the question, Is it a sin to worship a man?

My response to questions like these is to first define the terms.

Oftentimes our understanding of words can cloud the issue. I like to first clarify the meaning of words.

What Does “Worship” Mean?

In our current culture the English word “worship” as a verb means to “show reverence and adoration for (a deity); honor with religious rites.” according to Google.

However in the Bible, the Hebrew word that is most often translated as “worship” (“shachah” H7812) in the KJV of the Old Testament simply means “to bow down” according to Brown-Driver-Briggs’ Hebrew Definitions.

Customary Practice

bowing-downThere are examples of righteous men bowing down to other men in the days of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and there was no fault in it.

And Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. (Genesis 23:7 ASV)

And he (Jacob) himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother (Esau). (Genesis 33:3 ASV)

And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves to him with their faces to the earth. (Genesis 42:6 ASV)  Continue reading

Memorializing Passover

GoatOur family is going to be memorializing the Passover event of Exodus 12 tonight, April 3, 2016 after the sun goes down.

We’ll be eating lamb and unleavened bread with bitterness, remembering what happened on the night before the great exodus from Egypt in Moses’ day, as well as recalling the event of Yeshua’s death as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

How to Memorialize Passover

When we first rejected the idea of celebrating Good Friday and Easter Sunday six years ago, our desire was to simply learn about the Passover because we never paid that much attention to it in the past. But over time, as we met others who were observing Passover, it was difficult to know how we were supposed to recognize this occasion each year, given what we were hearing from them.

We did not feel comfortable with the traditional Jewish Seder service/meal because much of it was based on tradition, and we were only interested in doing what the Bible said. So, we understood the Passover meal was to simply consist of eating roasted lamb (or goat) with unleavened bread and bitterness.

And the best way to memorialize it we thought was to read (and discuss) the story of Moses being called to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt, and the plagues leading up to and including the plague of death to the firstborn as outlined in the first 12 chapters of Exodus.  Continue reading

Try Starting at the Beginning

Want Better Understanding? Try starting at the beginning.

Start at the very beginning…a very good place to start.

Whenever I aim to understand a particular passage in Scripture, I find it necessary to always consider the immediate context. However, it’s not always enough to just consider the surrounding context. Better understanding may be found when we start back at the beginning. 😉
